about

Originally broadcast by BBC Radio 4 in August 2009

You are invited to join Hardeep Singh Kohli for the first of his daily invitations to enjoy some ‘Tea and Biscuits’. The first programme takes place at a ceremony to induct new citizens into the United Kingdom. Brent Council in North London was the first council to hold one of these ceremonies in 2004 and now they run on average three a week.

Hardeep arrives as tea and biscuits are served and talks to the new citizens as they reach the final stage of their British naturalisation. They come from all over the world - Somalia, Iraq, Ghana, Egypt, Croatia and India. They’ve all passed their UK knowledge test, been through the residency qualifications, and now come to the Town Hall to affirm their oath of allegiance and receive their citizenship certificate. They talk to Hardeep about their journey and their new status over a bonding cup of tea, and a biscuit of course!
